A difficult vintage due to wet, overcast and cold conditions throughout the ripening season leading to a later than anticipated harvest.
The lack of sunshine resulted in stressed colour development in the skins and many red wines tended to be lighter than usual in colour and body. Nevertheless, aromas and flavours were frequently quite attractive.
For us, a few barrels “stood out” and these were blended into our 2011 Reserve Pinot Noir. Fermentation was carried out in small open fermenters and maturation in French oak barriques for 10 months. Unfined and unfiltered. Bottled 6 March 2012, alcohol 13.5%.
Despite its light colour, the wine exhibits strong Pinot varietal character on nose and palate with plenty of spice and floral notes to add to its complexity and charm.
